An overview of the work being conducted at Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory (TLL) to improve access to nutrition. There are several key innovations currently under development:
Heavy Metal Remediation in Rice: To address the issue of heavy metal poisoning affecting millions of children in Bangladesh, the lab is developing a strain of rice that transports heavy metals, such as cadmium and arsenic, to the plant's leaves rather than the grains.
Fortified Staples: The team is embedding essential micronutrients into familiar food staples, such as bee hoon, to increase the availability of nutrition for the masses.
Additional Research: Other projects observed at the lab include zero-mile fish farms, plants that communicate via scent, and the development of lab-grown tomatoes.
This prompted the some reflections on the future of nutrition:
Collaboration: Increasing access to nutrition is described as a "team sport" that requires integrating innovations from various labs, startups, and research centers.
Systemic Improvement: The goal is to create an accessible future for nutrition that both raises the ceiling for potential and raises the floor for everyone.
